The 11-month-old boy apparently fell into a mop bucket of water inside a home in Jamaica, the NYPD said. Emergency responders rushed the boy to Jamaica Hospital in serious condition, but doctors pronounced him dead at 11:25 a.m.
Officials said that this group was an informal day care and therefore likely did not need a state license, however the departments of Consumer Affairs and Health are investigating.
The Medical Examiner will work to determine the cause of death.
