A plain-clothes officer shot a panhandler who allegedly tried to stab the cop with a screwdriver, the New York Post reported. The NYPD's chief spokesman confirmed.
The suspect had approached two cops and asked for a smoke. One officer flashed his shield, and suddenly the panhandler stabbed him with the tool three times, according to the NYPD. The officer's bullet-resistant vest apparently protected him from serious injury.
The officers and the suspect then struggled, ending with shots fired. The officers fired a total of five rounds. They hit the panhandler three times and a 16-year-old bystander once, who was grazed in the leg.
The wounds were not life-threatening, authorities said. The panhandler was listed in serious but stable condition. The cop and the wounded teenager were hospitalized in stable condition.
As a result of the police investigation, the 3 and 4 subway trains had numerous service changes the MTA said. Dozens of commuters were seen waiting outside the subway entrances
