MYFOXNY.COM - After a report by Fox 5's Ti-Hua Chang highlighted the growing problem of poverty among Asian Americans, the office of Gov. David Paterson convened a special meeting with community leaders and various nonprofits to discuss ways the state can better serve Asian Americans in need of assistance. Commissioner David Hansell from the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance and other members of the governor's staff attended the meeting.

The Asian American Federation conducted a study into the problem. The federation found that many of the Asian poor worked, and on average worked longer hours. One reason for the poverty despite working is that many Asian immigrants find themselves in dead-end service jobs in hotels or restaurants. Recent Asian immigrants are often unaware of programs such as unemployment, Medicare and housing, according to the study.
