MYFOXNY.COM - Friends, family and dignitaries gathered at Riverside Church in Manhattan to pay their respects to Wilbert Tatum, the publisher emeritus of the New York Amsterdam News. Tatum died February 25 while on vacation in Europe.

Under his tenure, the News became a powerful and sometimes controversial voice for the residents of Harlem and for issues important to African Americans all around the city.

Among those who attended the funeral were Mayor Mike Bloomberg, former Mayor David Dinkins, Rev. Al Sharpton, and Rep. Charlie Rangel. A number of people spoke, including Tatum's daughter, Elinor, who took over as the paper's publisher when her father retired.

Tatum's family says the newspaper's offices have been inundated with flowers. So instead of sending more flowers and condolences, donations can be made to:

Amsterdam News Educational Fund

New York, NY 10003
