MYFOXNY.COM - Yonkers officials advise residents to keep their windows, doors and ventilation systems shut after a massive fire at the Con Edison substation at 142 Kingston Avenue.
The flames broke out at around 5 a.m. on Wednesday. Firefighters brought the fire under control several hours later. Witnesses reported hearing several explosions at the site. There were no power outages.
SkyFoxHD was over the scene at around 6 a.m. as firefighters appeared to be getting the upper hand on the flames.
Yonkers Fire Department officials say homes on three streets in the area were evacuated as a precaution. SkyFoxHD Reporter Kai Simonsen said homes in the area did not appear to be in danger.
Massive plumes of smoke could be seen for miles. The New York State Thruway runs near the substation. Smoke covered a portion of the roadway during the morning rush.
An electrical substation is used by power companies to transform voltage.
