ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Legislative employees in Atlantic City will get a paid day off instead of an unpaid furlough day because of a paperwork foul up.
Mayor Lorenzo Langford called for all city employees, excluding the public safety departments, to take 10 furlough days beginning with one on Monday.
The resort city is facing a huge budget shortfall. The legislative branch intended to have its employees take days off to help balance the budget.
However, City Council President William Marsh, whose nickname is "Speedy", wasn't speedy enough in notifying employees.
He missed a deadline to give employees the necessary 45-day notice of the furloughs. He has now sent a second memo that their first furlough day will instead be a paid “administrative day” meaning, they get the day off with pay.
Legislative employees will now take nine furlough days instead. Marsh says he "made a mistake" and will "take the blame."
