PATERSON, N.J.(AP) - Police in northern New Jersey say an off-duty officer shot and killed a man who had chased down and shot his wife and their two young sons.

Seven-year-old Adrian Gonzales was pronounced dead at the scene. His 11-year-old brother and their mother are hospitalized in critical condition.

The alleged gunman was taken to the hospital, where he died a short time later.

Paterson police aren't commenting on what may have motivated the shootings around 9 this morning. His wife had a restraining order against him.

A witness tells The Record of Bergen County the off-duty officer was in a car at a nearby fast food restaurant when he saw the shooting. Will Hayes says the officer told the gunman to drop his weapon and when he refused, the officer shot him.
