Police have arrested a distraught and depressed Ho-Ho-Kus man after flushing him out of his home with tear gas, authorities said Friday.
The man barricaded himself in his home with at least one rifle. Police said two handguns were registered in his name, but when they arrested him he only had a rifle.
Officers fired four shots of tear gas into the house. The 50-year-old man came out and surrendered, police said.
"He walked from the house," Kallenberg told NorthJersey.com . "Communication was lost with him and SWAT made a decision. He immediately surrendered."
Medics took him to a hospital for treatment.
The nearby Ho-Ho-Kus Elementary School on Lloyd Road was locked down as a precaution.
The incident began at around 9 a.m.
Sources tell Fox 5 News the man was depressed and suicidal.
SkyFoxHD was over 703 Hollywood Avenue as an armored vehicle was brought in on Friday morning. The man was believed to be alone.
