The girl's name was not released. She was taken to University Hospital in Newark where she was rushed into surgery Sunday night.
Authorities said her wound was not life-threatening.
Witnesses said a car stopped near her house around 3 PM. A man then got out and sprayed the area with gunfire before fleeing in the vehicle as neighbors and relatives rushed to the girl's aid.
It was not clear what sparked the shooting or who the gunman intended to shoot. Police decided the girl was an innocent bystander.
