A toy gun set off a half-hour lockdown of Princeton University late Wednesday morning.

Four boys found the toy gun and didn't realize people saw them and that they caused an alarm, said Princeton Borough police. The youths were in custody, however, it was not immediately clear whether they were going to be charged.

The lock down went into effect shortly before 11 a.m. after a report of a male with what appeared to be a handgun was reported near Dod Hall dormitory.  Princeton University's Department of Public of Safety and Princeton Borough and Township police investigated and reported that there was no gunman on campus.

Princeton University issued an all-clear at 11:34 a.m.

The school had told students and faculty to stay indoors until further instructions were released.  An emergency notification was posted on the school's Web site .

The Ivy League school held commencement exercises on Tuesday so the campus will have fewer students than normal.

Princeton is the fourth-oldest college in the United States. It has more than 850 full-time faculty members and about 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
