NEW YORK (AP) - A young woman was crushed to death by a subway train on Manhattan's Upper East Side.
Authorities say the No. 6 train hit her at the East 77th Street stop Thursday afternoon.
Police spokesman Paul Browne says authorities believe the young woman may have climbed down from the platform to retrieve a bag on the tracks.
As the train roared into the station, Browne says people on the platform were yelling that she should lie down. Instead, she got squeezed between the platform and the train.
The victim's name and age were not immediately available.
Police have shut down the station at 77th Street and Lexington Avenue, and No. 6 trains are running express in both directions from Grand Central Terminal to 125th Street.
