NEW YORK (AP) - A police sergeant has admitted driving drunk on his way home from a bar and hitting a man crossing a Manhattan street.
Sgt. Joseph Spiekerman, 43, pleaded guilty Monday to assault and admitted he was intoxicated during the June 29 collision. He has been promised a sentence that includes 60 days in jail. He'll serve it on weekends.
Prosecutors say Spiekerman was off-duty and at a bar for about six hours before he drove into Barry Gintel. Gintel was hospitalized for months.
Spiekerman was fired from the NYPD after 15 years on the force.
Defense lawyer Andrew Quinn says Spiekerman is "extraordinarily remorseful."
Quinn says the Spiekerman has been counseling other officers and emergency workers about drinking.
