New York City joined the nation in honoring explorer Christopher Columbus. The 65th Annual Christopher Columbus Day Parade was celebrated on Fifth Avenue.

Astronaut Buzz Aldrin was among the participants in the parade. A Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral preceded the parade.

The parade celebrated the spirit of exploration and courage that inspired Christopher Columbus's 1492 expedition and the important contributions Italian-Americans have made to the United States.

More than a dozen high school bands, as well as virtuosi professional groups from the United States and Italy, made the march up Fifth Avenue.

Traditional folk groups performed centuries-old dances, and cutting-edge designs were brought to the parade route in displays of Italian culture.

In addition to the marchers, floats and politicians, the festivities included folk dancers, musicians and Maserati cars from the 1920s.
