Carmen Huertas, 31, was legally drunk when she got behind the wheel of a car packed with seven young girls on the way to a slumber party, police say. Now the family of 11 year-old, Leandra Rosado, is left to mourn her tragic death.
Huertas lost control of her 1998 Mercury Sable and it flipped over on the Henry Hudson Parkway in Manhattan. She has been charged with driving while intoxicated and vehicular manslaughter.
The other six girls were between 11 and 14 and were taken to St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital and Harlem Hospital. According to police, their injuries include broken legs, broken wrists, and trauma. Two are listed in critical condition but all are expected to survive,
According to the New York Post, Leandra’s devastated father, who raised her as a single parent since she was four, swore he’d pursue justice any way he could.
“My daughter is gone because of you,” fumed Lenny Rosado. “As a parent, as a mother, where was your common sense? I call this murder. You put all those kids in danger. You put other people in danger. You’re taking other people’s lives into your own hands. You don’t have the right.”
According to the Daily News, Rosado said he doted on Leandra, a sixth-grader at Greenwich Village Middle School who went by the nickname Lily and loved music, art and watching rented movies.
He said he first could not bring himself to identify her body, but later walked into the hospital room and gave his daughter one last kiss on the forehead.
"She looked like she was sleeping," he said. "I told her I'll miss her."
