Southampton Doesn't Anticipate Evacuations

MYFOXNY.COM - Southampton Town Officials do not anticipate having to order evacuations in connection with Hurricane Earl unless its track changes.

Currently Hurricane Earl is projected to pass more than 150 miles to the east of Montauk and the two expected tropical force winds and effects.

Lt. Robert Iberger says that even if Hurricane Earl is well over a hundred miles east of Montauk residents will likely experience strong winds, rain and heavy surf activity.

Residents were being asked to secure loose yard items, charge batteries, purchase necessary supplies, have cash available, and be prepared to leave if necessary.

With tropical force winds many areas were expected to have power outages and trees blocking roads.

Town officials are in direct contact and continually reviewing updated information from the National Weather Service, Suffolk County Emergency Management and other town and village officials.

If the track changes to the degree that the velocity of anticipated winds or impact of surge were considered a serious threat a voluntary evacuation would be requested possibly followed by a mandatory evacuation.
