WEST HILLS, N.Y. (AP) -- A triggered automatic fire alarm has led to the discovery of dozens of malnourished and dead animals at a spacious Long Island home.
Firefighters respon ded to the West Hills home after the alarm went off there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Suffolk SPCA says there was no fire, but they found a skeletal-looking pony, goats and dozens of dogs.
It says the owners were arrested Wednesday and charged with animal cruelty.
SPCA Chief Roy Gross says the couple's two-story, three-garage home sits on a large property with a barn, where the pony was found.
He says about 100 dogs and three goats also were found. Gross says the animals had no food or water.
