MYFOXNY.COM - A Baldwin man and his son were working in their detached garage on Sunday when a propane tank exploded, causing a fire, and leaving the father with serious burns.

Police believe the explosion, which happened at 26-45 Central avenue just before noon, may have been the result of a spark from one of the machines Steven Haber, 52, was using.

Haber was taken to Nassau University Medical Center where he was admitted in critical but stable condition with serious burns. His wife and adult son were also taken to NUMC where they were treated and released for minor burns.

Neighbors said that despite his injuries, Steve Haber fiercely fought the flames, fearing they would spread to his house.

On the front lawn were several charred gas tanks, including some that appeared to be propane tanks.

Extensive damage was done to the garage and the fire was extinguished by the Baldwin Fire Department. The blast gutted the garage and partially collapsed its roof.
