Police have charged an off-duty NYPD detective with vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving in connection with the early morning death of a pedestrian in the Bronx, the department said Friday.
Det. Kevin Spellman, 42, was driving a 2009 Chevrolet when he struck the woman at the intersection of West 232 Street and Kingsbridge Avenue at about 6:30 a.m.
An EMS crew took Drana Mikac, 67, to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she later died.
Spellman, who is assigned to a joint NYPD-federal fugitive task force, refused a breath test at the scene.
Sources told the New York Post that his breath smelled of alcohol, so officers took him in for questioning. A blood sample was drawn a few hours later, according to the New York Post.
Spellman faces charges of vehicular manslaughter, criminal negligent homicide, and DWI.
The Chevy belongs to the U.S. Marshals Service, according to the Post.
