MYFOXNY.COM - BP gas station signs across New York City have been vandalized.
Dried, dark paint could be seen streaming down one sign in Harlem on Wednesday. It's one of several signs damaged likely in retaliation for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. BP owns the oil rig that began leaking several weeks ago.
Good Day New York spoke with a station owner on Kent Avenue in Brooklyn. He said the anger by the vandals is misplaced. The vandalized BP gas stations are not owned by the international oil giant. They are franchises who are customers of BP.
A station on Union Avenue was also vandalized as was one on East 125th Street in Manhattan and one in SoHo.
The station owners think that the vandals are filling up balloons with paint and throwing them at the signs.
A cap that was placed over the leaking, underwater pipe has collected more than 900,000 gallons of oil. The government estimates about 600,000 to 1.2 million gallons a day are leaking from the bottom of the sea.
