Willis Avenue Bridge Floating Into Place

MYFOXNY/AP - A 350-foot-long replacement bridge for the Willis Avenue Bridge has arrived in New York City aboard two barges.

The 2,400-ton swing bridge passed under the Brooklyn Bridge at 8 a.m. Monday.

The bridge is replacing the existing 109-year-old span that connects Upper Manhattan and the South Bronx.

"It's really one of the work horses of the city's infrastructure. It carries 70,000 vehicles per day," DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan told Good Day NY.

It is being pushed by three tugboats and towed by a fourth to its new location on the Harlem River, just south of the existing bridge. The new bridge will be tied up to the shoreline until it is installed, beginning Aug. 9.

It's expected to open to traffic in November.

Removal of the existing span is set for Sept. 20.

The bridge was constructed at an Albany-area port.
