Cash For Appliances

BY LUKE FUNK

MYFOXNY.COM - The Cash-For-Appliances program gives cash incentives to get people to buy energy efficient appliances.

The program is funded with federal stimulus money.

It offers rebates for high efficiency appliances including:

  • Boilers
  • Central air conditioners
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Freezers
  • Furnaces (oil and gas)
  • Heat pumps (air source and geothermal)
  • Refrigerators
  • Room air conditioners
  • Water heaters

The federal government allowed each state to customize the program.  For example, residents living in warm-weather states may benefit more from the use of energy-efficient air conditioners, while consumers in a cold-weather state would benefit more from efficient furnaces.

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities administers the State Energy Program in New Jersey. They may be reached at http://www.njcleanenergy.com/.

No trade-in will be required. Unlike the Cash For Clunkers program, wherein participants had to hand over their old car and the clunker was sent to the scrap heap, participants in cash for appliances don’t have to exchange an older appliance for a new one.

New York's Great Appliance Swap Out is part of the cash for appliances program.  The program was supposed to end on February 21, 2010 but there is left-over money so you can still get rebates.

New York consumers must submit applications for rebates via a Web site or by calling the program hotline 1-877-NY-SMART. Applicants must then mail their completed applications with all purchase receipts and recycling receipts (if applicable) postmarked by April 30.
