MYFOXNY.COM - There are a lot of spas that offer cosmetic procedures promising to make you look younger.

That was the lure for one woman. Carol Ianelli thought she was going in for something simple but walked out in unbelievable pain and with horrible scars.

Ianelli went to a Long Island spa for cosmetic work. She says she paid about $3,000 for what was supposed to be a simple laser procedure performed by Dr. Avelinni. She claims that he told her he was board certified.

Ianelli says he burned her skin. She says the next day her face was so swollen she couldn't open her mouth. She says she went back to see Dr. Avellini, who told her it would take a couple of days to get better.

She says it only got worse and she got blisters on her face. They popped and turned into holes.

But when she went back to the spa again, she says she was told that Dr. Avellini was gone. She never heard from him again.

Ianelli says another doctor at the spa tried to heal her wounds but she had to have plastic surgery to fix the damage.

Fox 5 researched Dr. Avellini and found out that he's not board certified by any of the 24 boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Fox 5 found Dr. Avellini practicing at a different spa. Fox 5's Andrea Day talked to Doctor James Avellini and asked him if he was board certified. On camera he said he wasn't but couldn't explain why his business cards had "board certified" printed on them. Dr. Avellini said his cards would be corrected. His on-line biography also had the line "board certified in cosmetic surgery". Avellini's lawyer tells Fox 5 that the entry was done by other people and it will be corrected.

Fox 5 wanted to be clear that Dr. Avellini does have a medical license.
