CITY ISLAND, N.Y. - More than 100 firefighters battled a two-alarm fire inside a building on City Island in The Bronx on Monday morning. Eleven firefighters suffered minor injuries.
Now the union that represents firefighters says that the emergency response system is flawed. They say that the firefighters were sent to the location of a cellphone tower because that's as far as the 911 call could be traced. The UFA says that dispatchers aren't adequately trained.
The FDNY says that when a precise address can't be pinpointed, it is proper procedure to send the firefighters to the nearest cell tower in the hope that the fire will be visible nearby.
They were taken to Jacobi Medical Center.
The blaze at 415 City Island Avenue destroyed the first and second floors of the apartment building.
A store on the ground floor was also left in ruins. It's not clear what sparked the flames at around 6:40 a.m.
The flames were out by 8:13 a.m.
