MYFOXNY.COM - Elections with less than 3 percent voter turnout happen regularly in off-year elections where the stakes are high for taxpayers. For example, Tuesday was Election Day in Nassau County: communities held 55 elections for fire districts, libraries, and water districts.
FOX 5's Barbara Nevins Taylor has been investigating government waste. She found these special districts often pay out mega salaries.
The special districts provide good employment opportunities for many. A Fox 5 investigation found some districts are like family-run businesses with relatives working side-by-side.
In Nassau County there are water districts, water authorities, water companies -- and tax payers supporting high salaries. In the county, 46 separate operations are right next door to each other. In most cases, elected, or appointed commissioners oversee the local water services that some suggest should be managed centrally in order to save money.
Instead, a patchwork of costly administrations exists. Fees, taxes, and bonds pay for the administrations. Each water district takes water from the Long Island Aquifer, stores it in wells, and delivers the water through its own pipe system. Consultants are often hired for technical work, and construction. Yet all have superintendents in charge of small crews that test water, do daily maintenance, and collect the money.
