Details of a car crash in which an Australian teenage girl died were posted on Facebook last week before the girl's family was informed, the Brisbane Times reports .
The 16-year-old girl was a passenger in the car and died at the scene of the crash in the southern Perth suburb of Leda.
Police said the girl was not wearing her seat belt when the car swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle and rolled over. The girl's devastated parents arrived on the scene shortly after reading about the horrific accident on Facebook.
It is not clear who posted the information on Facebook, but police said it was unfortunate that the family found out the tragic news through the social networking site.
"We're disappointed, but there's nothing we can do about it," Sgt. Graham Clifford said. "It's not illegal but we're disappointed for the family."
Three other people inside the car, including the 21-year-old driver, escaped with minor injuries, according to police.
Last week, a Pennsylvania man was arrested for using Facebook to allegedly solicit sex from his teenage daughter. Information on the social networking site has been used for positive outcomes also. Facebook postings helped a Florida family keep tabs on their daughter who was involved in small plane crash in the Gulf of Mexico last weekend. The girl and two others survived the crash and were able to let their loved ones know through their Facebook posts.
