Police in California have identified the infamous serial killer known as the "Night Stalker" as a suspect in the decades-old murder of a child in San Francisco.

Richard Ramirez is now on death row at San Quentin State Prison after being convicted of 13 murders. He was identified through a DNA match as a suspect in the 1984 killing of a nine-year-old girl Mei "Linda" Leung.

The child was killed in the basement of a residential hotel in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood where she lived with her family. Police say Ramirez was staying at two different hotels in the same neighborhood at the time.

Police say the girl's family still lives in San Francisco and were grateful when told of the break in the case. An official says it's painful for the family, but "hopefully it brings closure."
