MYFOXNY.COM - Community leaders in Queens say that gangs are a growing influence on teens, so they got together Wednesday evening to give parents some tactical support to help their children.
City Councilmember Julissa Ferraras, who organized the meeting, said that gang problem is getting worse and that they are recruiting in middle school and even in elementary schools.
Parents gathered in a meeting room at the Pan American High School in Elmhurst to learn about ways to protect their children. Weapons and gang paraphernalia confiscated from students at city schools were on display -- evidence of just how serious the threat is.
The graffiti evidence of gang activity isn't hard to find. A community affairs officer from the NYPD told the parents about warning signs and youth programs that are alternatives to street culture.
