Federal Stimulus Money For Energy Saving Projects

A Bonus for Going Green

There is a bonus for going green. Local governments can take advantage of a windfall from the $787 Billion federal stimulus program.

A chunk of that money has been set aside for energy saving projects and is earmarked for county and local governments.

There are strings attached. There are specific types of projects that can be funded with the money. But the goal is to help local governments save energy, hopefully save taxpayers money and create jobs.

Counties, cities and towns in New Jersey are proposing to use the money for everything from buying energy efficient vehicles, to putting solar panels on buildings, to giving local community groups money to hire workers to help weatherize older buildings and houses.

The deadline for applying for this money is June 25, 2009. We're providing you with a list of where the money can go, if the local governments have the right plans. But as these projects gear up, we hope that you will alert us if you see waste or fraud. You can get in touch with Unit 9 reporter Barbara Nevins Taylor via email at barbara.nevinstaylor@foxtv.com .
