July 8, 2009 -- The one word not mentioned during a
meeting of the commission charged with saving New Jersey's
horse
racing industry -- "racino" -- is the very one that helped
trigger
the group's creation.
The term refers to horse racing tracks that also feature
electronic gambling machines. Neighboring Pennsylvania, New
York
and Delaware all have them.
But New Jersey has been unable to reconcile the interests of
its
separate race tracks and casinos.
The split was on display Wednesday as a casino industry
spokesman's testimony never mentioned racinos and suggested
the
tracks focus on improvements to their own business.
Racing industry representatives say it's ridiculous to
suggest
the industry can survive without embracing the same
innovations as
competitors.
