MYFOXNY.COM - Ladies, when you're filling up your grocery cart, experts say five so-called superfoods should always be on your shopping list. (Men, these foods are great for you, too.)
Frances Largeman-Roth , a senior editor at Health magazine and registered dietician, says start your morning with oatmeal.
"Oats are not only important for lowering cholesterol, but the soluble and insoluble fiber help you to feel full," she says.
A cup a day will give you 3 to 4 grams of fiber toward your 25- to 30-gram goal a day
Next, yogurt packs a powerful health punch, especially Greek yogurt, Frances says. That is because Greek yogurt is double-strained so it requires more milk, resulting in higher protein and calcium levels per serving.
Then add this super food to your yogurt: Wild blueberries. Fresh ones can be hard to find, so frozen are good, too.
"Wild blueberries are insanely high in antioxidants," Frances says. "They are one of the richest sources out there, but you cannot get them in winter so go for them frozen."
Next: Add red beans to your salads. Frances says they are also rich in antioxidants and they can help keep you trim because they're a type of starch that burns fat.
While all sorts of vegetables are nutritious, Frances picked broccoli as superfood No. 5 for this list.
She says that in addition to having calcium and fiber, broccoli can help fight cancer, studies show.
"Broccoli has the ability to remove extra estrogen from the body, so in that way it can help you fight breast cancer," Frances says.
