MYFOXNY.COM - Medical headlines for Tuesday, September 29.

Text of Dr. Sapna Parikh’s report:

HIGH HEEL WARNING: Wearing the sexy high heels now could cause you pain later in life. This new study looked at about 3,500 women and men- they were all asked about foot pain and about their current and past footwear. The researchers say for women-- there was a link between wearing high risk shoes and foot pain even years later. High risk shoes by the way were defined as shoes that lack support-- including high heels, sandals and slippers.

SLEEP BETTER: Lose a little weight and you may sleep better! This new study confirms what other research has shown-- that weight loss can eliminate sleep apnea symptoms in people who are obese. Sleep apnea is where the airway becomes temporarily blocked-- it causes loud snoring and interrupted sleep and puts you at risk for heart disease and stroke. These researchers say those who lost the recommended weight were three times more likely to completely solve the problem.

EXERCISE TO AVOID CANCER: New diet and exercise guidelines are released that can help you avoid cancer. The American Institute for Cancer Research suggests exercising 30 minutes a day. Also, avoiding sugary drinks and limiting the intake of heavily salted, processed foods that are high in sugar and fat, but low in fiber. Eating a greater variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans along with limiting the consumption of red meats and alcoholic beverages are some of the other guidelines.
