All the rain in the last couple of weeks has left a lot of standing puddles of water, and that may have contributed to the deaths of two dogs in Brooklyn who drank this kind of water.
A terrier mix named Parker used to run around this dog run in Williamsburg died over the weekend. The once healthy, active dog died from a confirmed case of leptosporosis, a disease caused by spiral-shaped, fast-moving and nasty bacterium that attacks a dog's liver and kidney.
It was here in nearby Cooper Park that a vet believes Parker got sick. He believes the dog drank from a standing puddle of water and that an infected rat had urinated in. That contaminated the water with the bacteria.
