MYFOXNY.COM - The Good Day Café is celebrating the Vendy Awards, a contest for the best food carts around the city. Rosa Cardosa, the owner of El Rey del Sabor, was on Good Day New York to show off some Mexican cooking that earned her a spot as a Vendy Award finalist. Cardosa cooks up some chalupas.
EL REY DEL SABOR CHALUPAS RECIPE
Serves 1
1 lb of choice of meat
1/2 cup of small sliced onion
1 cup of pinto beans
1 cup of shredded fresh cheese
1 cup of sour cream
1/3 cups of mexican hot sauce
Shredded lettuce
3 corn tortillas
1/2 cup of yellow rice
Lightly grease a large skillet. Add the ground meat of choice along with onion.
Cook until the ground meat is browned.
Then place the tortillas on the skillet to heat.
After removing the tortillas add the meat and onion mixture, along with the cheese, lettuce and sour cream.
Assemble the chalupas by folding them in half.
Add the rice to the side, topping it off with beans.
THE VENDY AWARDS
The Vendy Awards raise money for the Street Vendor Project at the Urban Justice Center, which advocates for the rights of NYC's vendors.
The 6th annual Vendys will be on Governor's Island on September 25th. Finalists will go head to head for bragging rights as the city's top sidewalk chef. A panel of judges will award the coveted Vendy Cup - and the over 1,000 attendees will vote for the People's Choice award.
Viewers can check out www.streetvendor.org/vendys for upcoming announcements of this year's finalists for Best Desert and Rookie of the Year.
The judges will award the Vendy Cup based number of factors, including flavor, portability and personality. The attendees will also vote for their favorite from this group of finalists to award the People's Choice.
The vendors can cook whatever item they choose and aren't required to share their selection before the event.
The event goes from noon - 5pm. Tickets were $85 but are sold out. Viewers who show up at Governor's Island on the day will be able to buy from previous Vendys winners selling their food to the general public, but won't be able to attend.
