Airline Blanket Fees, Job Shop

MAGAZINE SALES DOWN: Here is more evidence the recession is not yet over. People continue to cutback on relatively inexpensive items like magazines. According to the latest numbers, newsstand sales fell more than 9 percent during the last half of 2009. And some well-known names suffered the biggest drops, single-copy sales of W and Newsweek, for instance, dropped more than 40%. At the same time, there were a few bright spots. Off-roading must be getting more popular... circulation of the magazine Off-Road Adventures was up 483%.

AIRLINE BLANKET FEE: Call it "blanket coverage” the new fee American Airlines will soon be charging. Starting May 1, getting a blanket on American Airlines will cost you $8. The charge applies to coach passengers on domestic flights that last more than two hours. Passengers on flights to Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America will also have to pay a fee. For your money, you get a blanket and inflatable neck pillow plus a $10 coupon to Bed Bath & Beyond. Coach passengers on domestic flights of less than two hours are completely out of luck, you won't have access to blankets at all!

OFF-BROADWAY DISCOUNTS: Theater-goers, we have a treat for you today. In an effort to help boost ticket sales, the city is launching a discount program for 25 off-Broadway shows. The "on the house" program will offer two-for-one tickets starting Monday through February 28.
