MYFOXNY.COM - Growing costs and a lack of interest by students lead the board of directors of Hofstra University to drop the school's football program.
Good Day New York spoke with two players about the surprising news on Friday.
"There is stuff we could have done... reached out to alumni... it's heart breaking," said Said Gaida.
The Division 1 AA football program has been offered at the school since its inception in 1937.
On Thursday, Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz said "the choice was painful and clear." It costs approximately $4.5 million a year to run the program, according to school officials.
Eleven coaches will be laid off and the 84 team members will have the option of staying at Hofstra with their scholarships or transferring to other programs.
