MYFOXNY.COM - NY Money Authority headlines for Wednesday, November 18.
Text of Lisa Murphy's report:
FLYING SURCHARGES: If you plan on flying, expect to pay surcharges for traveling on busy days. The $10-$20 by Delta, United and Northwest for holiday travel generated so much money that they are now being extended to Memorial Day. Many days are in March and April which coincide with Easter or spring break. For Monday, February 8, the day after the Super Bowl, there's a $50 surcharge. Starting in May, U.S. Airways will impose a new fee that is equal to five percent of the fare price on all domestic flights.
TUITION UP AT SUNY: Tuition is going up by two percent at the State University of New York. If approved by the governor and the legislature, beginning next fall, state residents will pay just over $5,000 a year at SUNY’s 64 campuses. The tuition increase comes out to $100. This is the second straight year that the board of trustees voted for a tuition hike. Last year, the price rose $310.
TOUGH JOB MARKET: It's going to be tough for new college graduates to get a job. A Michigan State University report shows that the job market for grads dropped 40- percent in the past year and hiring is expected to be down another two percent in 2010. If you're looking for work, you might be better off looking to companies with fewer than 500 employees. They are the ones most likely doing the hiring.
FOX 5 JOB SHOP: One place that is hiring right
