MYFOXNY.COM - Thousands of knitters have banded together to knit "The World's
Longest Scarf" to benefit Heifer International, a nonprofit that
helps poor families become self-reliant with farm animals and
training in small scale farming.
As part of the celebration of the United Nations'
International Year of Natural Fibres, an organization called "Keep
the Fleece", under the direction of Linda Cortright, organized
teams around the world to knit sections of the World's Longest
Scarf that were joined together at the New York Sheep & Wool
Festival at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, New York,
Oct. 17-18, 2009.
Knitters on teams with names like "Ewe & ME" (Brunswick,
ME), "Happy Hookers" (Texas), "The Fleeceniks" (Denver, Colo.) and
"Knit Unto Others" (Arkadelphia, Ark.) asked sponsors to pay $1 per
row or $10 per inch of knitting.
Keep the Fleece teams collectively raised $25,000 that Heifer
International will use to provide sheep, llamas and other
fleece-bearing animals to impoverished families all around the
world. Heifer not only donates the animals, but provides
earth-friendly agricultural training so that the families can
nurture and grow their herds and become self-reliant. And then
these families promise to Pass on the Gift of baby animals to other
families in need. Donations to Heifer is like a gift that keeps on
giving.
Here's how you can help more families receive fleece-bearing
animals through Heifer International and add to the efforts of all
the knitters who created the World's Longest Scarf:
