The gala inducted two new honorees into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame: Quincy Jones, whose contributions to American popular music as a composer, record producer, artist, film producer, arranger, conductor, multi-media entrepreneur, and humanitarian are unparalleled; and soul superstar Patti LaBelle. Hundreds of celebrities and prominent New Yorkers attended the event.
Since 1934, the Apollo Theater has played a major role in cultivating artists and in the emergence of innovative musical genres including jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, soul, and hip-hop. In 1983, the Apollo Theater received state and city landmark designation. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
