Don Rickles, Bob Saget Help Out Bye-Bye Birdie

Wednesday night in New York at the final preview night for "Bye Bye Birdie" a set mishap caused a 20-minute delay, but luckily for the audience there were two comedians in the theater to help pass the time. Don Rickles shouted zingers from the audience while Bob Saget helped out John Stamos, the play's lead actor, by telling jokes and riffing about the delay.

The New York Post reported that Rickles was in the orchestra section and shouted, "I'm too old for this." He continued to get impatient and heckled, "I came here for a night, not a weekend!" He also shouted to Stamos to get a haircut.

Stamos tried to get Rickles to come up on the stage, but the 83-year-old remained in his seat. Saget, who starred with Stamos on the TV show "Full House," did get on stage to help entertain the audience.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Saget told some jokes, but he had to speak through a microphone rigged to Stamos' forehead. "I'm really glad your crotch is not miked," he joked.

The other stars of the play, Gina Gershon and Bill Irwin, also appeared briefly on stage to entertain the crowd while stage technicians worked to get the show back on. Saget at one point asked Gershon to perform something from "Showgirls" a movie she starred in. The actress obliged with a quick feathering of her hands in front of her face, according to EW .

The delay did not ruin the show for the attendees, though. "The audience loved it," Jim Zians, 50, of San Diego who was at the performance, told The Post .

A few people in the audience posted updates about the mishap on their Twitter feeds. TaraLynnWagner posted, "Set of bye bye birdie fell apart. Bob saget is now on stage vamping." And kevinddaly shared, "Tech issues at Birdie. Bob Saget & Don Rickles entertaining crowd w. stars. That audience might actually get its money's worth..."

"Bye Bye Birdie" starring Stamos, Gershon and Irwin is a 1960 musical about a rock 'n' roll idol getting sent into the Army and the effect on teenagers in a small Ohio town. The play is being staged at the Henry Miller’s Theater by the Roundabout Theater Company. The official opening was Thursday night, and there were no reports of set malfunctions, though one review was not too kind .

Back in June at the Tony Awards Bret Michaels, performing with his band Poison and the cast of the play "Rock of Ages," missed his mark and was struck by a piece of scenery as it descended from the ceiling. ( See a clip of the accident .) Michaels suffered a broken nose and needed three stitches for a cut lip.
