How Jackson's Memorial Came Together

(MYFOX NATIONAL) - Two TV pros, Ken Ehrlich (longtime producer of the Grammy Awards) and Kenny Ortega ("High School Musical"), had the difficult task of producing the Michael Jackson Memorial in very little time.

Even though the Memorial was a made-for-TV event, the two producers insisited the event would be a restrained affair without "bells and whistles."

"It will be a celebration of Michael's life [but] we're not approaching it as a TV show," Ehrlich told the N.Y. Daily News on Sunday.

And it was every bit the celebration that they hoped it would be. The Memorial worked because it had so many different levels -- spirit, remembrance, celebration, mourning -- captivating the different levels of Jackson as a performer, a friend and family member.

While much of the event was planned, the most touching moment was also the most unexpected moment. That was when Jackson's daughter, Paris-Michael, bravely stood at the microphone and said, "Daddy has been the best father you can ever imagine. I just wanted to say I love him so much."

Ehrlich told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that Paris' moving moment "was not planned." He said that the family was going to come up and speak, but he "didn't know the kids were going to come up with them." He added, "A lot of the show was not scripted. Music was laid out, but most of the speakers really spoke from their heart," according to USA Today .

After the event, Ehrlich told MSNBC that the Jackson family asked him "to help us take Michael home." He said the Memorial needed to have "reverence, respect and show the greatness of the artist."

Ehrlich added that he didn't feel a lot of pressure, even though a billion people may have been watching on TV around the world. "It needed to be all about Michael," he said. "What we showed today ... was that he was human."
