The tri-state area is home to some of the nation’s finest high school football teams and players, including last year’s top ranked team in the country. Fox 5 and My 9 will be honoring these stars who make Friday night lights shine with “High School Athlete of the Week.” Each week we will profile a player whose performance stands alone—the best of the best. Watch “High School Athlete of the Week” on Fox 5's Sports Extra, Sundays at 10:30 p.m. and My 9’s The Ten O’Clock News at 10:30pm.

The list of NFL stars who began their gridiron glory at local high schools includes Joe Theisman,, who starred at South River High School, then went on to Notre Dame and played pro for the Washington Redskins.

Also, Franco Harris who played for Rancocas Valley Regional High School, then Penn State and starred with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Ray Rice a former Rutgers star now with the Baltimore Ravens. He played high school ball for New Rochelle High School
